Te Whare Rongomau is a place of support and healing for whānau affected by violence or abuse. We offer care that meets you where you’re at – with different types of support available over time, as your needs change. Elder Abuse Response Service
Awhi and support for our kaumātua
Manaaki Ora Elder Abuse Response Service is here to support kaumātua aged 65 and over who may be experiencing – or at risk of experiencing – any form of abuse or neglect.
This can include:
- financial abuse (including scams)
- physical abuse
- verbal abuse
- sexual abuse
- psychological or emotional abuse
- neglect
We provide a free and confidential service and you’ll be treated with care, respect and compassion every step of the way.
Who is this service for?
Anyone aged 65+ living in the Whakatāne, Western Bay of Plenty or Taupō districts.

Non-Violence Programme
Building safer, stronger whānau through kaupapa Māori
Our Non-Violence programme is a ten-week mandated Kaupapa Māori programme for tāne. It supports the development of positive relationships and practical tools for conflict resolution.
The programme draws on te ao Māori to help tāne build a stronger sense of identity, connection and self awareness. Participants are supported to reflect on their environment, make informed choices and take steps toward wellbeing and self-control.
Support for wāhine
We also offer one-on-one sessions for wāhine, providing space for support, reflection and healing.

Adult Safety Programme
Adult Safety Programme – Strengthening Safety
Whānau Safety Programme, “Te Hīkoi Hohourongo” is a journey of recovery that follows a te ao Māori framework, offering whānau an opportunity to heal and recover from violence and abuse through a process of active self-healing.
The programme supports whānau to understand the cycle of violence, its impacts and how it can be broken. Interventions are tailored to the needs and realities of each whānau, recognising that healing is not a one-size-fits-all.
