Mate Wareware
Mate Wareware - Dementia
Mate wareware is a term often used in te ao Māori for dementia. It refers to a range of symptoms caused by diseases that affect the brain – including changes in memory, thinking, emotions and social connection.
Mate wareware is an illness of the brain – it is not a normal part of ageing. While many people experience forgetfulness or slower thinking as they get older, mate wareware is different. It’s a condition that gradually gets worse over time and can have a real impact on daily life.
Kaumātua are living longer than ever before which is something to celebrate. But with this, we are also seeing more kaumātua being diagnosed with mate wareware. It is important to know that a diagnosis is only made when the symptoms interfere with daily life.
Mate wareware can affect anyone. While it is more common in older people, younger people can also be affected.
If you or someone in your whānau is showing signs of mate wareware, it’s okay to reach out – early support can make a big difference.
